Painting timber eaves properly is not simply a cosmetic job. It is a practical way to protect the roofline, maintain the appearance of the property and identify small defects before they become more involved repairs.

Painting timber eaves starts before the first coat
A dependable result begins with a close inspection. This is the stage where an experienced painter checks not only the visible paintwork, but also the gutters, downpipes, roof edge and timber joints nearby. There is little benefit in restoring an eave if a gutter overflow will soak it again during the next heavy downpour.
Check for moisture and timber damage
Any source of water ingress should be rectified before painting. If the timber feels soft when gently pressed, has visible rot or has separated at a joint, repair or replacement is usually needed before coating begins.

Small areas of damage are easier to repair while the surrounding coating is still sound. If peeling spreads, timber starts to soften or staining returns soon after cleaning, it is worth investigating the moisture source rather than repeatedly touching up the paint.
